Fuck This Shit Show A Gratitude Journal for TiredAss Women Funny Swearing Gifts | Gag Gifts for Women | Small Gifts for Sisters and Best Friends Cuss Words Make Me Happy Crazy Tired Beetches 9781791783136 Books Reviews

  • I bought this to give my friend as a gift because she's a tired mom, we cuss...thought it would be perfect. Totally disappointed. In fact, I'm probably going to return it. This "book" is literally the same 2 pages printed repeatedly. Not funny or creative at all. It looks kinda cheap.
  • This book was sooo disappointing. When I ordered there were no reviews or consumer pictures, so I took a gamble.
I assumed this would be a funny and lighthearted journal to inspire laughing at the stresses of life. A perfect gift for my currently stretched-to-thin friend...
No. Not at all! It was 1 lame and very uninspired journal page (technically 2 pages that made 1 spread) over and over and over. Not worth the paper it was printed on.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND. Regrettable purchase.
  • Literally the same thing on every page. The description makes it seem like the pages will have some variety and different writing prompts but it doesn't. I hope my BFF likes it because I'm not impressed
  • I was hesitant because I didn’t see any interior pics, but it’s perfect! Ordered it for an over stressed mommy friend and I think I’ll be ordering one for myself too! Definitely made her laugh but she’s also excited to use it and put her emotions and to do list on paper.
  • I wish there was more diversity but overall still cute.

Also if you came here to complain about the curse words
    1. Find a hobby
    2. Kids are going to learn curses whether you like it or not. Maybe monitor the things your kids look at or simply spend some more time with your kids.

Happy holidays! ;) love the book!
  • this journal was the most perfect gift IDEA for my co-worker. When I scrolled through gifts in searches on I stumbled upon this journal and just knew I had to get it for her! It arived just as informed me it would. The condition came damaged which was very disappointing. I knew the process of returning would result in added time and stress as well as receiving after the holidays which defeat the purpose of gifting for the holidays.
. I gifted it anyways. The internal pages are repetitive. Regardless I love the concept and She absolutely loved the pineapples and sayings! I’m sure she saw the imperfection and that is disapointing considering I took extra time to pick the perfect gift. I would NOT buy again based it coming home with marks on the cover. (Advice bubble wrap and better choice of shipping process ) I wish it was recieved in prestine condition consindering it’s price, that is what you expect. Descriptions and previous photos do not describe what is inside the journal. Here you go, it’s simple. Pages linked in photos...Makes scence. It would have gotten 5 stars if it came in without creases and dark spots as new condition.
  • Absolutely funny
  • Just what I thought it would be.

How Language Began The Story of Humanity Greatest Invention Daniel L Everett 9781631496264 Books Reviews

  • When an elder statesman scholar at the top of his or her field writes a book to summarize what they have learned about their favorite topic, then it's usually worth checking out. Everett does not disappoint. Aside from being a very readable survey of our best current inferences of the emergence of human language, Everett takes the time to explore and teach the proper application of the methods of good science throughout the book. The other strong element of praise that I have for the book is that this is the best appreciation of our ancestor Homo Erectus that I have ever read. Finally, someone is showing Erectus the respect they deserve.

On the cautionary side, Everett talks about a lot of other researchers and contributors by name and is not shy about is praise for and qualms or issues about their work. He can be a little prickly at times, but I think that is a good thing. Everett's style strikes me as being a much more honest than leaving the reader to try and read between the lines.

I do take issue with his categorical denial of any correlations between the way the brain and computers work, although even in this his arguments are quite cogent. It's just that he doesn't know the machines as well as he thinks he does, and there are two very clear and quite interesting strong parallels between the way the brain works (or doesn't work) and the way the machines perform. Those deal with plasticity and the interesting parallel between the functions of REM sleep and stored data management, and the consequences that flow from depriving either the brain from REM sleep or a stored data environment from routine organizational maintenance. They are strikingly similar. I think that if he knew about those two aspects of the machine world he would be pleasantly surprised. That said, if you are interested in the never ending search for insight into how we became what we are you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
  • How Language Began by Daniel L. Everett

Controversial and revisionist are two words that came to my mind while reading this book.

I can't claim any deep specialty in this area but I've read a few books on the subject of linguistics and thought I was keeping abreast of the subject. I thought that Noam Chomsky was widely accepted as setting the benchmark for linguistic study and that the idea that language developed as a result of a genetic mutation in the last 50,000 years was equally accepted. Likewise, I read Steven Pinker's "The Language Instinct" and I was sold on the notion that the human brain has a component for handling language.

Daniel L. Everett's book "How Language Began" challenges those complacent beliefs. Everett comes across as a one-man wrecking crew to set things straight. Everett sets forth his thesis in the preface

"The story of how humans came to have language is a mostly untold one, full of invention and discovery, and the conclusions that I come to through that story have a long pedigree in the sciences related to language evolution – anthropology, linguistics, cognitive science, palaeoneurology, archaeology, biology, neuroscience and primatology. Like any scientist, however, my interpretations are informed by my background, which in this case are my forty years of field research on languages and cultures of North, Central and South America, especially with hunter-gatherers of the Brazilian . As in my latest monograph on the intersection of psychology and culture, Dark Matter of the Mind The Culturally Articulated Unconscious, I deny here that language is an instinct of any kind, as I also deny that it is innate, or inborn.
As far back as the work of psychologist Kurt Goldstein in the early twentieth century, researchers have denied that there are language-exclusive cognitive disorders. The absence of such disorders would seem to suggest that language emerges from the individual and not merely from language-specific regions of the brain. And this in turn supports the claim that language is not a relatively recent development, say 50–100,000 years old, possessed exclusively by Homo sapiens. My research suggests that language began with Homo erectus more than one million years ago, and has existed for 60,000 generations.
As such, the hero of this story is Homo erectus, upright man, the most intelligent creature that had ever existed until that time. Erectus was the pioneer of language, culture, human migration and adventure. Around three-quarters of a million years before Homo erectus transmogrified into Homo sapiens, their communities sailed almost two hundred miles (320 kilometres) across open ocean and walked nearly the entire world. Erectus communities invented symbols and language, the sort that wouldn’t seem out of place today. Although their languages differed from modern languages in the quantity of their grammatical tools, they were human languages.
Of course, as generations came and went, Homo sapiens unsurprisingly improved on what erectus had done, but there are languages still spoken today that are reminiscent of the first ever spoken, and they are not inferior to other modern languages."

Everett argues his thesis in great detail, which results in this book being a soup to nuts survey of linguistics, running from anthropology to historical linguistics to the mechanics of how words are formed by the human vocal apparatus.

Everett's position on Homo Erectus is both interesting and idiosyncratic. Everett argues cogently that H. Erectus must have had speech capabilities in order to accomplish the things that they accomplished, particularly building sea going vessels capable of taking their species to offshore islands beyond the site of land. Everett also discounts the trustworthiness of scholarship that identifies other homo species

"According to some classifications, there were, soon after and before erectus, other species of Homo co-existing or existing in close succession – Homo habilis, Homo ergaster, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo rudolfensis among others. But, again, most of these various species of Homo are ignored here, with the focus kept on Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens. Most other Homo species are murky, maybe nothing more than variants of Homo erectus. However, the story of human language evolution changes in no significant way, whether erectus and ergaster were the same or different species."

Homo Sapien is simply an improved model of Homo Erectus.

Everett offers this on the sophistication of Erectus

"This view of human cooperation in erectus is strongly supported by the archaeological record. As erectus wandered through the Levant, near the Jordan between the Dead Sea to the south and the Hula Valley to the north, they came to stop at the site known today as Gesher Benot Ya’aqov. At this site, going back at least 790,000 years, there is evidence for Acheulean tools, Levallois tools, evidence of controlled fire, organised village life, huts that housed socially specialised tasks of different kinds and other evidence of culture among Homo erectus. Erectus may have stopped here on the way out of Africa. Erectus technology was impressive. They built villages that manifested what almost appears to be central planning, or at least gradual construction under social guidance, as in Gesher Benot Ya’aqov. This is clear evidence of cultural values, organised knowledge and social roles. But such villages are just one example of erectus’s technological and organisational innovation."

    I didn't know that.

Communication exists in sub-homo species. Non-humans use indexes and icons, non-arbitrary referents that mean one thing only. Humans use symbols. For Everett, the human achievement was a brain capable of using symbols and engaging in recursive thinking. Language is not a product of the wiring of the brain any more than a hammer is; both language and a hammer are inventions or tools of the human mind. Everett notes

"A startling conclusion emerges from deficits affecting language There are no language-only hereditary disorders. And the reason for that is predicted by the theory of language evolution here – namely that there could not be such a deficit because there is no language-specific part of the brain. Language is an invention. The brain is no more specialised for language than for toolmaking, though over time both have affected the development of the brain in general ways that make it more supportive of these tasks."

This insight comes after a long discussion of the kinds of ways that things can go wrong in the human ability to talk. Everett's point is well-made. We don't say that a hammer must be "wired" into the brain because someone without thumbs can't use one. There is no genetic condition that effects language - no one is born without an ability to comprehend verbs except insofar as they can also not comprehend nouns and prepositions. Likewise, as a practicing Linguist, Everett has seen far too many grammars to accept the notion that there is a universal language.

For readers of anthropology and linguistics this is a very useful work because it shows how much is still open to debate. I think that for someone looking for a survey of linguistics this is a helpful and interesting book. If you are like me and are intrigued by the "gosh-wow!" ideas of "deep history" and "human evolution," this book is well-worth the investment.

On the other hand, it is not particularly written for the lay reader. Everett spins off idea after idea and the reader has to stay on his toes to keep up. Also, there is a lot of dense and dry material. For example, the chapters on the mechanics of language are important (and I found them interesting insofar as Everett shared his personal experiences in the field), but I found my enthusiasm for the subject lagging at times. I suspect that for others with less background, these are chapters that can and will be skipped.

Obviously, on the whole, I found Everett's thesis captivating and his arguments cogent.

    PSB
  • This book may well mean a revolution in our understanding of language, its origin and meaning. It proposes a radically new theory of the origin of language, supported by systematic review of related subjects (Evolution of hominins, Biological adaptations of humans for language, The evolution of language form, and cultural evolution of language).

His theory is, contrary to prevalent thinking that language originated after the emergence of Homo Sapiens, that language was primarily for communication (against Chomsky), and was born as an invention of Homo Erectus, approximately two million years ago. He strongly disagrees with the hypothesis that a genetic mutation allowed sapiens to create language a few tens of thousands years ago. This "single shot" generation of language goes against the very slow pace (baby steps) of language evolution. Moreover, there is no evidence supporting a genetic background for language. There are no genetic "language diseases", there is no part of the brain identified solely with language.Theories that define language as structure, serving no primary communication purpose, are not compatible with the relatively high level of technology, social structure, and migrations of erectus, including overseas migrations that required some form of navigation. It is impossible to understand these achievements without symbolic communication, i.e., language.

The final proof is that modern languages of ian aboriginals are mostly for communication, highly variable, adaptive to their realities, mostly unstructured, thus frontally contradicting Chomsky.

All in all, a major contribution, presenting a well supported, radically new theory. Everett could have titled his book "The Origin of Languages"

What happens when an undocumented teen mother takes on the U.S. immigration system?

When Aida Hernandez was born in 1987 in Agua Prieta, Mexico, the nearby U.S. border was little more than a worn-down fence. Eight years later, Aida’s mother took her and her siblings to live in Douglas, Arizona. By then, the border had become one of the most heavily policed sites in America.

Undocumented, Aida fought to make her way. She learned English, watched Friends, and, after having a baby at sixteen, dreamed of teaching dance and moving with her son to New York City. But life had other plans. Following a misstep that led to her deportation, Aida found herself in a Mexican city marked by violence, in a country that was not hers. To get back to the United States and reunite with her son, she embarked on a harrowing journey. The daughter of a rebel hero from the mountains of Chihuahua, Aida has a genius for survival—but returning to the United States was just the beginning of her quest.

Taking us into detention centers, immigration courts, and the inner lives of Aida and other daring characters, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez reveals the human consequences of militarizing what was once a more forgiving border. With emotional force and narrative suspense, Aaron Bobrow-Strain brings us into the heart of a violently unequal America. He also shows us that the heroes of our current immigration wars are less likely to be perfect paragons of virtue than complex, flawed human beings who deserve justice and empathy all the same.

"This is a great story, although heartbreaking. It follows Aida Hernandez, and her fight for a decent life after leaving Mexico for America.

The writing in the book is great, and the story flows well. I couldn't put it down!"

The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez A Border Story eBook Aaron BobrowStrain Reviews

  • Aida's story illuminates the immigrant experience at our Southern borders and the vulnerability of women who seek permanent and legal immigrant status in the United States.

I empathized with Aida who endured the unimaginable and survived.

The House on Mango Street changed Aida Hernandez's life. In her darkest hours, she remembered the words of hope "I have gone a long way to come back."

Aida wanted to dance. She wanted to finish high school and go to college. She wanted to become a therapist. She wanted to give her son a good home. She wanted to love and be loved. Her hopes were just like yours and mine.

But Aida's life held more horrors than any one body should be able to endure. She had survived even death but suffered from crippling CPTSD--Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She came from a legacy of abuse but a knife attack tipped her over the edge. It only took one mistake, a $6 mistake, to remove Aida from her son and family, locked up for months in a women's prison. They were not given tampons, or enough toilet paper, or adequate wholesome food. There were not enough beds or blankets to keep warm.

And that is when Aida saw The House on Mango Street on the prison library shelf and it started her reclamation and a life of helping the other women with her.

Aaron Bobrow-Strain's book The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez brings to life unforgettable women, and through their stories, explores the failure of Prevention Through Deterrence which posits that if the journey is horrific enough people will not come. Women suffer the most in this system.

He shows how American economic and political policies and the desire for cheap labor created the influx of illegal immigrants.

Immigrants in detention centers are treated like hardened criminals with shackles, solitary confinement, lack of medical care, meager inedible food, and a scarcity of hygiene supplies. They have no legal rights. They are provided no legal counsel. Border Patrol and detention centers have created jobs and business--paid for by the government.

Who are the people seeking refuge in America? What drives them from their homeland? What options are available for legal immigration? What happens to those who are apprehended? This book will answer all your questions. But you may not like the answers.

Justice. How many times have we forgotten this value?

The proceeds from this book will be shared between Aida Hernandez, the Chiricahua Community Health Centers to support emergency services for people dealing with domestic violence or sexual assault, and the author to offset costs of writing the book. Which for me means an instant add to my "to buy" list..

I thank the publisher who provided a free ebook through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
  • Sad, timely, and the sort of book that could help people understand the humans behind the pictures on tv. Aida's life should not have gone the way it does but she's a determined woman. Coming from nothing, she built a life and then had it yanked from under her. She never gives up on her dream. The idea that making it hard will stop people from coming is inane. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. More power to Aida and those like her.
  • This is a great story, although heartbreaking. It follows Aida Hernandez, and her fight for a decent life after leaving Mexico for America.

The writing in the book is great, and the story flows well. I couldn't put it down!

  • I haven't finished reading The Tale Teller yet, but I can say it's Anne's best yet, full of interesting crime, especially good descriptions of scenery which effortlessly "take you there," accurate depictions of family life (Bernie's, Leaphorn's, Bernie & Chee's, as well as several other characters) and the quiet explanations of the Navajo worldview in context. The main thing is that it all FLOWS so effortlessly and cohesively. With even a few moments of humor! Loving it. Thanks, Anne.
  • I dearly love all of Tony Hillerman's books. I was happy that his daughter continued the series with Leaphorn and Chee but they aren't quite the same. They are well written and I have enjoyed them, even though the style is different. Bernadette is the focus of Anne's books with Leaphorn and Chee relegated to very minor peripheral roles. I sometimes think it would be good for her to go her own way with a different set of characters, but it would mean saying goodbye to old friends.
  • Had to force myself to stop reading, so I could write a review. Thanks Anne for continuing on your Father's footstep. I cannot wait to restart my reading of the book and savoring every page. I really enjoy the adventures of Joe leaphorn. Also reading about Navajo history, customs and beliefs.
  • I am only about four or five chapters into this and I can tell Anne has another winner. Joe Leaphorn is back along with his intrepid Louisa, and it really is a good read. Joe is making a comeback after his devastating wounding and we get to see Louisa's character developed more. Anne keeps her Dad's characters true to form, and even better and she has definitely hit her stride on this genre. There are bodies piling up, Leaphorn and Manuelito are on it, and we are getting some great Navajo history to boot. I spent an hour on Wiki studying Navajo history after I finished my evening allotment of chapters--it is hard not read it all it once. Still a mystery to me is Joe and Louisa's relationship, hoping something clues me by the end of this one, I have always thought Joe needed to lighten up some, maybe in this one! At least he is sweet with the cat.
  • Anne Hillerman is no longer just Tony’s daughter. She has become a strong voice in her own right. Her skillful handling of familiar characters and expansion of the role of Bernie Manuelito make her books a great read. As Joe Leaphorn makes his return in the THe Tale Teller, we can rejoice in the familiar and enjoy the new. Brava, Anne!
  • The Tale Teller is the best book of Anne Hillerman's series. For awhile it seemed to me she was focused more on Bernie Manuelito and the other characters were mainly on the sideline. This time however Chee and Leaphorn are back has real people in her book. Reading how Joe handles his problems with his brain injury and his relationship with Louisa and even her cat is great. Chee has done a lot of growing and the book reflects that has well. The history of the Long Walk is beautifully written. Thank you Anne Hillerman for such a novel.
  • Received this book and it was so good, I couldn't stop reading it. Finished it in three days. They just keep getting better and better. I've read all of her fathers books and now all of her books, and I have to say, she's every bit the story teller her father was, different, but every bit as good. I should say that you really need to read them in the order they were written to understand what's happened to the characters and how this impacts the current story. Good books! You should get them all! Now, I'll have to wait another year for the next installment.
  • Love these characters from Tony Hillerman's books, but even though I have read the other books and found them disappointing...I decided to try this last one and see if they were getting better. This is like reading a 3rd grade reader, or maybe "Dick and Jane". The dialog is silly...."do you want a glass of water?" Small details that are unnecessary to the story, plot, or development of the characters, just bog the reader down. I am wishing the author would just get on with the story, or make an attempt at the story. I may not be able to finish...and I'm not buying anymore of these books no matter how much I miss Chee and Leaphorn.

The essential book on the Italian master of perspective and portraiture
Antonello da Messina is one of the earliest virtuosos of oil painting, a true Renaissance master who―via the influence of the Flemish painters―raised perspective and geometric rigor to new heights of clarity and serenity. His mastery of the three-quarter profile portrait is another of his key accomplishments. With 300 color plates, and at 340 pages, this book is the most comprehensive monograph available in English, and the first substantial Antonello publication in decades. Today Antonello is most celebrated for paintings such as his Crucifixion in Bucharest and the Salvator Mundi, Madonna with Child and Saint Jerome in His Study in London. These works, alongside his portraits, embody his accomplishments in realism and the steady, calm atmosphere he brought to Italian painting. This exceptional publication fills a longstanding and conspicuous gap in the literature on Italian Renaissance art. Antonello da Messina (c. 1430–79) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential painters of the Quattrocento. Born in Sicily and trained in Naples where he studied the work of Provençal and Flemish artists, he is often supposed to have encountered the pioneering art of Van Eyck at this time, whose influence he seems to have imported into Italy. Antonello's impact was particularly keenly felt in Venice, where he lived from 1475 to 1476; within a short time of his arrival, his work attracted so much favorable attention that he was supported by the Venetian state and local painters enthusiastically adopted his oil technique and compositional style.

"It All Comes Back to You is one of those stories you need to savor. You want to put the book down so as to have more to read tomorrow, but you can't. It becomes attached to you, a part of you."
Dan Brown, Author of Reunion

Alabama, 1947.
War's over, cherry-print dresses, parking above the city lights, swing dancing.
Beautiful, seventeen-year-old Violet lives in a perfect world.
Everybody loves her.
In 2012, she's still beautiful, charming, and surrounded by admirers.

Veronica "Ronni" Johnson, licensed practical nurse and aspiring writer, meets the captivating Violet in the assisted living facility where Violet requires no assistance, just lots of male attention. When she dies, she leaves Ronni a very generous bequest―only if Ronni completes a book about her life within one year. As she's drawn into the world of young Violet, Ronni is mesmerized by life in a simpler time. It's an irresistible journey filled with revelations, some of them about men Ronni knew as octogenarians at Fairfield Springs.

Struggling, insecure, flailing at the keyboard, Ronni juggles her patients, a new boyfriend, and a Samsonite factory of emotional baggage as she tries to craft a manuscript before her deadline.

But then the secrets start to emerge, some of them in person. And they don't stop.

Everything changes.

Alternating chapters between Homecoming Queen Violet in 1947 and can't-quite-find-her-crown Ronni in the present, IT ALL COMES BACK TO YOU is Southern Fiction at its hilarious, warm, sad, outrageous, uplifting, and stunning best. In the tradition of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and Olive Kitteridge, Duke delivers an unforgettable elderly character to treasure and a young heroine to steal your heart.

It All Comes Back to You A Book Club Recommendation! edition by Beth Duke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • I’m not good with words and have never given a review on a book before, but here goes.

I LOVED this book. I was interested in this book because it is about my home town and my high school. After reading the first chapter, I was hooked and could not put it down.
It was entertaining and had such a suspense to it that I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next.
I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read. It not only shows the happy things in life but shows what all families go through every day. Love and tragedy plus perseverance.
Even if you are not an avid reader, I think you will enjoy this book.
    Ellen

  • I found this book easy and enjoyable to read. Beth Duke did a wonderful job of introducing her characters and her storyline and grabs your interest right away. The relationship between Ronni and Violet was very heartfelt and truly believable. It made me wish that I knew them both in real life. Violet was quite the character with lots of charm, confidence and beauty and made you feel that everyone really did love her. I have close to one thousand books on my and put this book near the top of my most favorites. Highly recommend this book. Lois C.
  • And what a wonderful book! Just finished it and loved it! Beth, you certainly know how to turn and twist, intrigue and surprise your readers! I hesitantly let my neighbor borrow it as it is one to read again and again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Only if Ronni finishes the book about Violets life will she get the money, so no mystery there.
The "fat" girl is a size 12! And like Violet at her age the most beautiful girl around.
I was looking for a feel good story but this is like eating refined sugar.
The characters are all too nice and basically have no personality.
I'm one third into the book and both stories are dragging and way too fairy tale.
  • Loved this book. It is easy to get swept up in the lives of the characters. I put off reading the book until I could have the time to really enjoy it. I read it in a day and a half because I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this book along with the other two written by Beth Duke
  • If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would! It’s a must read! I laughed , I cried, I dreamed, and I believed! “It All Comes Back To You” is one of the most well written novels I’ve read in quite a while. I was mesmerized by Beth Duke’s ability to immediately lure the reader into the lives of her characters with such vivid imagery and charm. The very first page captivated my attention and kept it until the final sentence. I loved the southern charm which eminated throughout the story making the characters more believable and loved. The twists and turns, as well as the intertwining of the lives of the characters made this out to be a very exciting and enjoyable book. I would highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read Beth Duke’s next novel!
  • I loved this book so much. I had a very hard time putting it down. I didn’t want it to end and find myself thinking about Ronni and Violet and how I miss these characters. I have lost both of my parents recently and have been reading mostly books on grief. I decided I needed to read a fun book that will take me out of my of my head and this book succeeded in doing that and I am grateful.
